Transforming lives with a sand dam road crossing - hear from Kee SHG

In 2021, Sand Dams Worldwide and our partner, the Africa Sand Dam Foundation, supported Kee self-help group in southeast Kenya to build a sand dam road crossing that not only provided them with access to water, but accessibility across a river and in between towns and markets either side of the river.

At Sand Dams Worldwide we believe incorporating the principles of sand dam technology with low volume road crossing designs will deliver a more robust and cost-effective rural roads infrastructure.

Minimise costs of repair and reconstruction.
Improve reliable access to markets and services.
Reduce local flooding and erosion.
Recharge groundwater.
Supply millions of litres of safe water for multiple use.
Contribute to climate change resilience.

February 2026 sand dam expedition with Koy Clothing

In February 2026, a group of volunteers teamed up with Sand Dams Worldwide, Koy Clothing and our local partner, Africa Sand Dam Foundation to support a community in Kenya to build a sand dam. The sand dam was funded by Koy Clothing and their wonderful customers, and will go on to provide the community with a local lifelong supply of clean water.

Sand Dams Worldwide is took part in the Big Give’s 2026 Earth Raise campaign (formerly the Green Match Fund), which offered supporters of participating charities the opportunity to have their donations doubled for just seven days. Over £22,000 was raised which will go towards a sand dam project in Tanzania.
