Trustee: John Peter Maddrell

36efa2ad-a86f-43b0-ab6c-d88a7464d195 John has been involved with Sand Dams Worldwide since its inception as 'Excellent Development' in 2002. Founded by John's nephew, Simon Maddrell, it has evolved into what it is today. Having farmed all his life, John appreciates the importance of water to all forms of life and is proud to continue supporting Sand Dams Worldwide IOM as a trustee.

Trustee: Ian Richard Hemensley

Pharmacist and Chief Operations Officer of the IOM Pharmacy Association

24495581-87df-49d3-9bb6-12e71569101e Ian graduated as a pharmacist from Manchester University in 1997 and returned to the Isle of Man a couple of years later to take over the family pharmacy business. In 2005 Ian became the island's first non-medical prescriber and he is currently the Chief Operations Officer of the IOM Pharmacy Association. In 2008, Ian went on a sand dam expedition with his cousin Simon Maddrell (Sand Dams Worldwide's founder and former Executive Director) and has been involved as a trustee of SDW IOM since its inception. He is pleased and proud to still be involved and to have witnessed how the charity has grown and developed over the years and made such a positive difference to the lives of so many people.

Simon has over 35 years’ experience in financial services including five years in Africa. In 2018, Simon led a group of 20 Barclays colleagues, supporting Sand Dams Worldwide in raising £43,000 and building a sand dam in Kenya. Simon is currently the Managing Director of IQ-EQ on the Isle of Man. Simon has an MBA with Durham University Business School.

Having took part in a sand dam expedition in Kenya back in September 2024, Emily saw first-hand the transformative impact of the charity’s work on local communities. Deeply moved by the experience, Emily is passionate about continuing her support for Sand Dams Worldwide and contributing to its mission of sustainable development and lasting change.

Director Operations for International bank on the Isle of Man

Having helped organise a couple of sand dam expeditions for his employer, Ian wanted to continue to actively support the charity in making a difference to people living in drylands, and was privileged to be asked to join the board of trustees in January 2025.

    February 2026 sand dam expedition with Koy Clothing

    In February 2026, a group of volunteers teamed up with Sand Dams Worldwide, Koy Clothing and our local partner, Africa Sand Dam Foundation to support a community in Kenya to build a sand dam. The sand dam was funded by Koy Clothing and their wonderful customers, and will go on to provide the community with a local lifelong supply of clean water.

    Sand Dams Worldwide is took part in the Big Give’s 2026 Earth Raise campaign (formerly the Green Match Fund), which offered supporters of participating charities the opportunity to have their donations doubled for just seven days. Over £22,000 was raised which will go towards a sand dam project in Tanzania.
