News and blogs Blogs A lasting gift for future generations Published in September 2025 Today (September 8th) marks the start of Remember a Charity (RAC) Week 2025. Every year, RAC and its associated members (including Sand Dams Worldwide) use RAC Week as an opportunity to share legacy stories, information about legacy giving, encouraging everyone to talk openly and positively about it, think about how they'd like to be remembered - and to maybe consider leaving a gift to charity in their Will (after looking after family and friends of course). This year RAC are running the ‘Be Remembered’ campaign, inviting all to join in celebrating the funny moments, interesting hobbies and unique quirks that we remember and cherish about our loved ones. Here at SDW, we know it can be a sensitive topic, but having had the kind support of legacy donations that have helped sand dams to be built and provide so many vulnerable families in drylands to access water, we’d like to take a moment in RAC Week to sincerely thank all those who have (or are considering) leaving a donation in their Will towards our projects. “As a member of a community who has benefited from a legacy donation, our lives have been transformed and we shall forever remember those who supported us. Legacy funded projects make such a big difference to people’s lives.” Veronica Katio Meko Maw’o self-help group member Kenya Sand dams (which can last upwards of 60 years) are truly a lasting gift that will support thousands of families in drylands to come. I’ve seen first-hand the impact of sand dams built over 10 years ago, still serving communities with an abundance of clean water, providing hope and opportunity for future generations, whilst simultaneously restoring and regreening local environments. It is this sustainability and long-term impact, alongside the stories from the communities, which makes the SDW team and our amazing in-country partners so dedicated to the cause, and thankful for all the support. “I want to thank all Sand Dam Worldwide’s supporters for their generosity, and add that further donations towards this work, including lasting gifts left in Wills, is deeply appreciated, as this will enable us to prepare for the future, and continue to support vulnerable dryland communities to transform their own lives and land with sand dams for generations to come.” Cornelius Kyalo Executive Director of ASDF (partner of Sand Dams Worldwide) SDW will never put our supporters under any pressure to leave a charitable gift in their Will. However, if what you read and see during RAC Week does inspire you to find out more about leaving a gift for sand dams in your Will, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
