In many dryland areas, women and children spend 6–12 hours a day collecting water—often from unsafe sources. Climate change is worsening the situation, making droughts more frequent and severe. Sand dams provide an effective, long-term solution: they naturally capture rainwater, store it safely within sand, and can supply up to 40 million litres of clean water each year to more than 1,000 people—for over 60 years.

Beyond providing water, sand dams help restore ecosystems, raise groundwater levels, and support climate‑smart farming so families can grow enough food.
